Hinton Admiral was built in 1720 and increased to its present size in 1790 after being badly damaged by fire in 1775. There have been several alterations, including a ballroom and extra bedrooms. The North wing was built as stables and servants quarters, it is now used for storage.
Harold Peto designed the terrace and the Rock Garden in the early 20th century. Garden designer Rupert Golby helped plan the start of the garden renovation during the 1990's.
The name of the house has no nautical connection - the area known as Hinton or Hinton Admiral was variously spelt Hentune (11th century); Henton Aumarle (14th century); Hynton Amerell, (15th century); Hynton Admyrall, (16th century).

Please note that the house is not open.
